Speech is the production of sounds and words. It includes motor planning for speech sounds as well as physical output. It also encompasses how we use our vocal cords and breath to produce those sounds. Language refers to how we use words to communicate with others. Changes in speech production (dysarthria) and language (aphasia) can occur after a stroke, trauma to the brain, and with a variety of neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson's disease, Frontal Temporal Dementias, and ALS).
Therapy can be provided to target word-finding skills, auditory comprehension, changes in pronunciation, and overall communication skills.
Treatment methods for speech and language disorders include word-finding techniques, strategies for using and understanding language, instruction in tongue and lip placement for speech sounds, coordination of muscle movements for speech production, and caregiver education.
